The creeping faded lines on walls and ceilings - we're all unfortunately familiar with the signs of water damage. Did you know that water damage doesn't have to be inevitable? Here are five things you can do to lessen the threat of water damage.
 

Clean Out Roof Gutters
 

Gutters easily become clogged throughout the year. In the fall autumn leaves cram themselves inside, in the spring they become full of birds' nests and branches. Blocked gutters can send water through the roof into the basement or your home's foundation - leading to serious water damage. It is very important to regularly keep tabs on your gutters and to ensure that downspouts extend at least 1.8 metres away from your home's foundation wall. Make sure that water does not flow toward your house or your neighbour's houses, or the back alley. 


 

Check Appliances Regularly 
 

Your washing machine and dishwasher are big culprits for leaking in your home. To avoid water damage from your major appliances, make sure the hoses are inspected at least once a year and replaced if there is any sign of cracking, bulging or corrosion. Regardless if your hoses are in good condition, you should be changing them every ten years - ideally with braided steal hoses which are less likely to swell or burst than standard rubber hoses. 


 

Do Not Let Pipes Freeze 
 

When pipes freeze with water inside of them, they will explode in a very expensive way. Before winter each year, make sure you drain your outdoor hoses and turn off outdoor faucets. It is also important to keep temperatures warm in your home to prevent your interior pipes from suffering a fate they are more likely to outside next to the elements. It is also good to keep note that if you plan on being away for more than four days in the winter that someone visits your house and drains your water supply lines. 


 

Keep Your Plumbing In Good Condition 
 

If you ever notice any leaks, humidity or mould in your home - get it inspected straight away! Leaving any of these for another day will only cost you more. Great tips to ensure your plumbing is in good condition is by never pouring grease down your kitchen or bathroom sink. This can clog your drains and traditional chemicals might not be able to get the job done the way a professional drain snake can. 


 

Carry Out Your Landscaping With Care 
 

Some of the plants in your front and back yards might have invasive root systems. These need regular attention as without care, they can easily take over your drainage system, pipes and septic tank, If you are thinking of planting a new garden make sure you ask your florist what their root system is like. If it's invasive, make a plan to keep the roots away from any water lines.
